Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at kbkywd@aol.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

What makes your breeding program different?

We are a preservation-focused breeding program dedicated to producing Wirehaired Dachshunds that reflect the breed standard in structure, temperament, health, and overall quality.

Our breeding decisions are guided by pedigree research, health evaluations, conformation, and careful selection. We prioritize producing well-rounded Dachshunds rather than breeding for color, trends, or appearance alone.

Are your dogs registered with the AKC?

Yes. Our puppies are eligible for American Kennel Club (AKC) registration, and we maintain pedigrees representing both American and international bloodlines.

Do you participate in dog shows?

Yes! Our dogs participate in AKC, UKC, and international conformation events, as well as companion and performance activities.

We believe outside evaluation provides valuable insight into breed type, structure, movement, and temperament.

Do you import dogs from other countries?

Yes. We selectively incorporate international bloodlines to maintain genetic diversity and introduce desirable qualities consistent with our breeding goals.

How often do you have puppies available?

Our litters are carefully planned, and availability varies throughout the year. We encourage interested families to contact us even when no puppies are currently listed.

Can I reserve a puppy?

Yes. We offer a reservation process for approved families. A $500 nonrefundable deposit is required to reserve a puppy or secure placement on our waiting list, subject to our written deposit agreement.

Can I choose my puppy?

We welcome preferences regarding sex, coat, and personality. However, puppy placement also considers temperament, developmental evaluations, and suitability for each family.

At what age can puppies go home?

Our puppies generally begin joining their new families at eight weeks of age, provided they are healthy, developmentally ready, and appropriately prepared for the transition.

Some puppies may remain with us longer depending on their individual needs.

Do you keep puppies for your own program?

Yes. We may retain puppies for further evaluation as potential show prospects or future additions to our breeding program.

What health testing do you perform?

We prioritize breed-appropriate health evaluations, including cardiac and patella assessments, Lafora disease testing, and additional examinations when appropriate.

Our breeding decisions consider health alongside pedigree, structure, temperament, and overall breed quality.

What is Lafora disease?

Lafora disease is an inherited neurological disorder that can affect Wirehaired Dachshunds. Genetic testing allows breeders to identify relevant genetic status and make informed breeding decisions.

Do Dachshunds have a risk of IVDD?

Yes. Like other chondrodystrophic breeds, Dachshunds have an increased predisposition to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD).

Although this risk cannot be completely eliminated, we emphasize thoughtful breeding decisions, appropriate body condition, sensible exercise, and responsible lifelong management.

Are puppies vaccinated and dewormed?

Yes. Our puppies receive age-appropriate preventative care, including vaccinations and parasite management, according to their needs and veterinary guidance.

We provide available treatment and vaccination records when puppies leave our program.

Do your puppies come with a health guarantee?

Yes. Our puppies are placed under a written contract outlining applicable health provisions, responsibilities, and procedures.

We encourage every family to carefully review and understand these terms before making a commitment.

Do you offer full AKC breeding rights?

No. Our puppies are placed with Limited AKC registration. We do not routinely offer breeding rights or outside stud services.

How much do your puppies cost?

Pricing varies depending on the individual puppy, pedigree, and other considerations. Current pricing and availability are discussed directly with interested families.

Are deposits refundable?

No. Deposits are nonrefundable, as outlined in our written reservation agreement.

Do you offer transportation?

Transportation arrangements may be available, including flight nanny services. Availability, costs, and arrangements are discussed individually.

Can I visit your program?

Visits are arranged by appointment and may be subject to biosecurity measures, litter age, and the health and safety needs of our dogs and puppies.
